Around this time of year (as I write this it’s December and full-on holiday season has hit), many begin planning for the new year. People talk about self-improvement and changes they want to make starting in January and yet may not have a clear picture of their baseline starting point.
For some, coaching or therapy can help with revealing the current state of being and where potential changes might realistically be made.
If funds are lacking or you want to get a head start, using self-reflective journal prompts can be a powerful way to bring an element of self-coaching or therapy into your life.
The journaling process involves structured or free-form expression of thoughts, feelings, and experiences through words. Much like coaching, journaling enhances self-reflection and cognitive restructuring, leading to improved self-understanding and better emotional regulation (Smyth & Helm, 2003)
Systematically channeling emotions through writing provides a sort of catharsis, encouraging a release of pent-up feelings and facilitating a deeper self-understanding.
This simple, low-cost activity can be done alone, or as a complementary tool to therapy or coaching, offering benefits that can significantly enhance health and well-being.
Below, are several journaling prompts, plus when and where to apply them.
8 Self-Reflection Prompts
Daily reflection is a practice anyone can use to gain insight and better self-awareness.
People with strong self-awareness are better equipped to handle life’s challenges, make informed choices, and build stronger relationships. By setting aside dedicated time each day to engage with their inner world introspectively, individuals can identify patterns, recognize triggers, and navigate challenges with clarity.
Engaging in this practice allows adults to build a bridge between past experiences and present emotions, fostering growth and strong coping strategies.
Prompts to end the day:
- Values check
What values did I uphold today, and when did I stray from them? How can I better align my actions with my core beliefs in the future - Learning
What did I learn today — about myself, others, or the world around me? - Interacting
Which interaction today left the most significant impact on me? Was it positive or negative, and why? - Dreams
What is one thing I desire, and how can I move towards achieving it? - Barriers and overcomes
What obstacles did I face, and how did I overcome them? If I didn’t, what could I do differently next time?
Prompts to start the day:
- Visualizing success
How does my ideal day look today? From interactions to tasks, how might everything play out in the best possible way? - Energy check
On a scale of 1 to 10, how energized do I feel today? If it’s less than ideal, what might I do to improve my energy and mood? - Daily inspiration
What affirmation, quote, poem, or song lyric inspires me today, and how can it guide my actions and mindset?
In our adult lives, the journey of our own self-discovery and finding purpose often faces to the background. Yet, delving deep into our sense of self and understanding our deepest desires, fears, values, and beliefs is critical for creating purpose and meaning.
